For anyone not familiar with the term “Freaknik,” it began as a picnic held near Atlanta University Center in the third week of April, hosted by predominately black colleges in the area. It was originally supposed to be an educational event that coincided with AUC’s Reading Day, but before anyone knew it, it had skyrocketed into a slew of drinking, dancing, custom cars, basketball tournaments, and rap battles. In 1999, the mayor of Atlanta officially banned the Freaknik celebration, due to incessant amounts of looting and public sexual harassment. (Look it up on YouTube) Since the ban, many gulf cities have hosted similar parties around the same time of year.

Adult Swim has decided to come out with a cartoon musical based on such an event, with a cast of more hip hop stars than you can shake a stick at. Premiering on March 7th, the same day on which I was born, this animated epic will definitely be worth checking out.
